چکیده

Abstract Deletion of histidine-rich protein genes pfhrp2/3 in Plasmodium falciparum causes infections to go undetected by HRP2-based malaria rapid diagnostic tests. We analyzed P. cases imported Australia (n = 210, collected 2010–2018) for their status. detected gene deletions patients from 12 25 countries. found >10% pfhrp2-deletion levels those Nigeria (13.3%, n 30), Sudan (11.2%, 39), and South (17.7%, 17) low pfhrp3 deletion (3.6%) (5.9%). No parasites with double were detected. Microsatellite typing Nigeria, Sudan, revealed relatedness among gene-deleted parasites, indicating independent emergences. The proportions signify a risk false-negative HRP2-RDT results. This study’s findings warrant surveillance determine whether the prevalence justifies switching tests Sudan.

Multidimensional Poverty in Sudan and South Sudan

This paper assesses multidimensional poverty in Sudan and South Sudan. We use the National Baseline Household Surveys (NBHS) of 2009 to measure poverty incidence in education, consumption, access to public assets and possession of private assets across these two countries. We differentiate between children/teenagers aged six to fourteen years and adults aged fifteen years or older. We apply a c...

Variation in Plasmodium falciparum Histidine-Rich Protein 2 (Pfhrp2) and Plasmodium falciparum Histidine-Rich Protein 3 (Pfhrp3) Gene Deletions in Guyana and Suriname

Guyana and Suriname have made important progress in reducing the burden of malaria. While both countries use microscopy as the primary tool for clinical diagnosis, malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are useful in remote areas of the interior where laboratory support may be limited or unavailable. Recent reports indicate that histidine-rich protein 2 (PfHRP2)-based diagnostic tests specific f...

Dracunculiasis in South Sudan

A Dinka-tribesman came to Marial Lou Hospital, South Sudan, in 2005. He experienced severe discomfort from a Dracunculus Medinensis (Guinea worm) emerging from his perineum (see Figures 1 and 2). The 80-cm-long parasite was successfully extracted. Persons get Dracunculiasis by drinking water containing water fleas harboring the larvae of the worm. The larvae are released into the water by the a...

HIV prevalence and behavioral risk factors in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army: Data from South Sudan

OVERVIEW After two decades of civil war, South Sudan has limited published data on HIV prevalence and behavioral determinants of HIV infection risk. A surge in HIV/AIDS prevalence is a real concern for this new country with limited access to medical or HIV preventive services, and low education and literacy levels. We present findings from the first bio-behavioral surveillance survey conducted ...

Histidine-rich protein 2 (pfhrp2) and pfhrp3 gene deletions in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from select sites in Brazil and Bolivia

More than 80% of available malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are based on the detection of histidine-rich protein-2 (PfHRP2) for diagnosis of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Recent studies have shown the genes that code for this protein and its paralog, histidine-rich protein-3 (PfHRP3), are absent in parasites from the Peruvian Amazon Basin. Lack of PfHRP2 protein through deletion of the pf...
